Douglas-Val Ziegler, Ph.D.

Globalization Research Strategist
 
For more than 30 years, Val has been helping companies create and implement the strategies and organizational and technical competencies necessary to define, develop, and deploy truly global products. He has worked in most areas of globalization, internationalization, and localization as project manager, systems engineer, technical writer, trainer, architect, research scientist, senior editorial and globalization manager, and globalization director at several global companies, including Kodak, Xerox, and Nortel. He has also consulted for IBM at Huawei, a leading telecommunications company.  Most recently, he worked at MathWorks where he successfully created and managed a geographically-distributed globalization organization.
 
In his work at Common Sense Advisory, Val’s primary focus is the firm's Localization Maturity Model consulting practice. His other coverage areas include research related to business globalization and localization, including all aspects of strategies, governance, processes, technologies, and operations.
 
Val has an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics with emphases on computational linguistics and the sociocultural foundations of language, including Romance linguistics, dialectology, and pidgin and creole languages. He has studied or done research on some 50 languages ranging from Algonkin to Twi to Chinese to Arabic to Saramaccan.
